This will be our last review updates as we will be closing our Season 2 for Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu this coming Sunday April 9, 2009 at 12 p.m.

LECTURE UPDATES

Week 17 started with Prof. Cecilio Duka finishing off his discussion on Labor relations and starting the Political law discussion with International law on Saturday afternoon. The whole day Sunday, Prof. Ryan Quilala discussed election laws, administrative laws and public corporations.

The whole weekend of week 18 was covered by Prof. Rene Gorospe as he discussed Political law.

This coming Saturday week 19 will mark our last week for season 2. Our last lecturer will be Justice Amy Lazaro-Javier who will lecture on Constitutional law. The last lecture will end on Sunday, August 9, 2009 at 11 a.m.

Review updates week 14, 15 and 16

LECTURE UPDATES

Weeks 14 and 15 is the review week for one of the most hated subjects in the Bar exams, Taxation. Fortunately we have very good tax lecturers. The lecture started off with Prof. Antonio Bonilla who lectured on income Taxation. This was followed by Prof. Eric Recalde who discussed Real property, custom and local taxes. The last tax lecturer was given by Prof. Rizalina Lumbera who lectured on Tax fundamentals and jurisprudence. On Sunday, July 12, we had our last mock bar which was of course on Taxation law.

Week 16 started off with our second to the last subject, Labor laws. Prof. J. Oswald Lorenzo was not able to lecture on Labor relations due to scheduling conflicts. Instead, Prof. Cecilio Duka, associate dean of San Sebastian college took over Labor relations. Prof. Duka will be returning next week (Week 17) to finish the Labor law lectures.

CHANGES IN LECTURE SCHEDULE FOR WEEK 17

Prof. Quilala and Prof. Duka has exchanged schedules, so please take note of the changes in lecture schedule for week 17:

July 25 – Saturday – Prof. Cecilio Duka will continue his Labor law lectures (Standards, Special labor laws and jurisprudence) after which he will finish the rest of the day with a lecture on Public International laws

July 26 – Sunday – Prof. Ryan Quilala will be lecturing the whole day on Election laws, Administrative laws and Public Corporations.

Coverage of the 2009 bar exams

What’s with the tree?

Some of you might be asking on why our blog, the Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu blog features a “tree” in its header.

Well aside from this blogspot theme, being one of the best looking themes that we could find, believe it or not there is a story behind the tree that that is also one of the reason why we picked this theme.

The story of the “tree” above, is the story of Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu (JBRC-Cebu). The story of JBRC Cebu began with three close friends, Zigfred Diaz, Alrey Ouano and Noli Dayanan who were buddies in law school. During their law school days, Noli was the chairman of the Review committee, the committee in charge of taking care of the bar lecturers. Alrey was also a member of that committee. Back then Southwestern University college of law had a tie up with another review center.

Noli and Alrey frequently ferried bar lecturers from the airport to their hotels and to the school while Zigfred went along for the joy ride. Their frequent interaction with lecturers from Manila made them establish a certain rapport with the lecturers.

When they were about to enter fourth year, they decided to take enroll in the regular and advance reviews in order that they might be well prepared to take the bar exams. They agreed among themselves that they will review in Baguio City because they believe it will be more “conducive to learning” considering the nice weather.

More than two months before they are about to leave for Baguio, one time Alrey was ferrying Prof. Gafar Lutian to the airport from his lecture. Alrey asked him if he knows of any good review center outside Cebu. Prof. Lutian told him about a different kind of review center, one that conducts mock bar exams, coaching and one that cares for its reviewees. The review center was located in Las Pinas and was called “Jurists Bar Review Center.” Prof. Lutian told Alrey that enrolling in Jurists and staying in Las Pinas is very nice, in fact according to him you will not be disturbed there because “Walang night life doon at. . . ang daming trees doon . . . you can even study under the tree”

Impressed by the trees, Alrey immediately called Zigfred up and told him about it. They talked to Noli about it and three decided to cancel their Baguio plans. Instead they booked a ticket for Metro Manila. After graduation, Zigfred and Alrey went ahead to Manila to check out the place. When they arrived there, they were somehow disappointed that there were no trees in the review center and about the night life, there was even a “Don’t tell mama” bar beside the review center ! The “tree” incident and the “no night life” claim became the butt of their jokes. They were so amused of the absence of the trees that the decided to confront Prof. Lutian about it.

Anyway tree, or no tree they enrolled at Jurists Bar Review Center manila. They were later on followed by Noli.

The trio enjoyed their stay in Las Pinas very much. They were Jurists’ “second” batch out of 100+ enrollees. They never missed a single day of review, nor did they ever miss to take a single mock bar. They were notoriously known to be the “Cebu boys” and were easily identified because they were the only ones that frequently brought with them 5 litter Wilkins Mineral water every time they go to the review site. (Jurists manila at that time was located in the 4^th floor of the STI Las Pinas building, they didn’t want to go down just to buy water)

Because they enjoyed Jurists Bar review Center so much and that they felt so at home with it, they decided to write a tribute about it. Called as the “Jurists Desiderata” it was the brain child of Captain Barbel (a.ka Alrey Ouano, this was his secret identity whenever he sent love notes to a fellow Jurista) who at the time was very much in love with another Jurista. (Somehow this caused controversy and Juristas were scrambling to find out who Captain Barbel was) (The coaches were also very concerned about this considering that the order was to “maintain the status quo”)

The Jurist Desiderata was simply a rephrasing of the regular Desiderata that Prof. Lutian used to present during the opening session. Zigfred also wrote the “Top ten reasons why I love Jurists Bar review Center” while Noli sang “The warrior is a child” during the closing party. The unique system of the three paragraph method, one on one coaching and follow up also impressed them so much that they wished they had something like this in Cebu. They opened this up with the Jurists administration, but initially they administrator’s felt that expanding in another place would be a logistical problem.

When they came back to Cebu, wishing to bring the “Jurists experience” to bar candidates the conducted a “Lex Pareto Notes bar boot camp” in both Southwestern University and the University of the Visayas following the Jurists system of mock bar and coaching. Since this was for free they only gave a 5 question mock bar and limited coaching hours. At the same time they gave several lectures on how to prepare for the bar exams.

The “experience” was received by the students very well. In the meantime, Chief Pros. Petralba found out about Jurists Bar Review Center and she appreciated the Jurists system so much. When she learned that a “boot camp” was being conducted she told them about this wonderful review center in Metro Manila to which they replied that they “graduated” there. She asked them to arrange a meeting with Atty. Hazel Riguera and then the rest is as they say “history.”

And what about the tree? What was Prof. Lutian’s explanation for it? Well they did ask him about it when they came back to Manila to bring lechon to the opening and to give their testimonial. (This is a Jurists tradition all who pass the previous batch who passed in the bar exams will come back and give a testimony in the opening, not to mention that you are suppose to donate something to eat in the opening for the next batch hehehehehe) :-) When they mentioned it in the testimonial, Prof. Lutian just laughed at it and explained that what he meant was that it is the University of Perpetual Help Las Pinas (Tie-up school of Jurists before) that has many trees in fact you could literally study under the trees.

And that’s the story behind the tree, you know ! :-)

LECTURE UPDATES

On weeks 11 and 12, we conducted our review on Criminal law. Prof. Modesto Ticman gave an extended 2+ hours lectures to clarify some issues in Criminal law 1.

Week 13 was a unique week for us as this is the only week wherein we had two mock bars. On Saturday morning we had our Criminal law mock bar and on Sunday afternoon we had our Legal ethics mock bar. Sandwiched in between that time, Prof. Erickson Balmes discussed Legal Ethics on Saturday afternoon while Prof. Patricia Estaniel discussed legal forms on Sunday Morning.

HANDOUTS UPDATES

Handouts for Criminal law 1 and 2 were given including Prof. Balmes Commercial law updates and the Suggested answers for the Commercial mock bar exams.

MOCK BAR AND COACHING UPDATES

Chief Pros. Petralba will be on leave for a month as she will be continuing her Master’s of law study in France. She will be back in time for our closing program. Those not coached by her in Commercial law mock bar will be coached by Atty. Diaz. In the meantime, the last 3 mock bars will coached by the 3 remaining coaches, Atty. Diaz, Atty. Ouano and Atty. Pulvera.

Since it will take about a week for the coaches to check all papers, all coaches will have their coaching session on July 11, 2009 unless otherwise announced. Take note that this will be the last day of coaching for the Legal Ethics and Criminal Law mock bar as we will be having our tax mock bar on June 12, 2009.

Jurista Focus: Atty. Razel Danlag-Luig

It is the tradition of Jurists Bar Review Center that bar passers will give a testimonial every review opening to encourage the next batch of

reviewees. Unfortunately, this year’s bar exam results was delayed and releasedduring the holy week so most of you who passed were already

out of town that was why we didn’t get to have testimonials from bar passers during the opening.

We do not want the current batch of reviewees to miss the opportunity to be encouraged by those who went ahead of them. So we have emailed a set of standard questions to our Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu Season 1 bar passers. Hopefully this short interview will help encourage you, our current season 2 reviewees.

The first season 1 bar passer that we are featuring is Atty. Razel Danlag-Luig. Atty. Razel A. Danlag-Luig graduated Bachelor of Science major in Psychology at Cebu Doctors' College. She took up Law and graduated at SWU. She is now happily married to Mr. Ryan L. Luig, marketing manager of Habagat Outdoor Equipment. They have two lovely children, Sean Rapahael and Mary Ryzel. As of now, Atty. Razel Danlag- Luig is still considering some options for her career.

Here is our short interview with Atty. Razel Danlag-Luig:

Jurists: In general how did Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu help you in your review?

Atty. Razel: Jurists made me prepared for the battle ahead, physically, mentally and most importantly, emotionally.

Jurists: How did the three paragraph method taught by Jurists help you answer the questions in the bar exams?

Atty. Razel: Honestly? It was quite difficult to apply it without having to consume so much time and so many words in my answers, but i could really attest that it worked for me. In fact, my highest subj. is Civil Law, it was a very long exam, yet i apllied the jurists method in every item i thought it is applicable, even in short sub questions.

Jurists: Did coaching and mock bar exams help you a lot? In what way did it help you pass the bar ?

Atty. Razel: This is the best part jurists have to offer. The mockbar helped me visualize the actual exam, more particularly with the mockbar notebooks that we used, it has the same features w/ what we actually used in the bar. The coaching also was very useful, i learned my strengths and weaknesses earlier.

Jurists: What was your most memorable experience in Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu ?

Atty. Razel: When Jurists invited our family members and friends for a conference and called them "caregivers", in the conference Jurists made them realize how important their role was.

Jurists: Any encouraging words to our Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu season 2 reviewees ?

Atty. Razel: Never forget to put God first...everything will follow. Initially, i didn't plan to take the bar because of serious family problems, then i prayed and prayed so hard for guidance until i finally decided to take and have my review at cebu-Jurists, it was Atty. Diaz who inspired me, when he was my professor in one of my last remaining subjects in the fourth year. When i started my review, i attended mass evryday, and asked God to grant me my request, i prayed so hard like it was between life and death, and believe me, it was as if evrything was paved for me, from my review, to my stay in manila, until the bar exams. I have two kids, and it was quite difficult to balance my role as a mom and my review, my husband was very helpful, in fact he was more than helpful, he was my caregiver. The conference Jurists gave, inspired him to take care of me and understand my moodswings during that time. No matter what obstacle may come your way, never get distracted, focus on your goal. To become a lawyer.

Jurists: Any specific bar tips that you can offer to our Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu Season 2 reviewees ?

Atty. Razel: Stick to the basics. that's what they always say when i had my review, I only realized that it is the best tip a reviewee can have, when i took the bar.

Now that you are a lawyer what are your plans?

Atty. Razel: As of now, I'm still deciding where to settle so i have no specific plans yet.

CARE GIVER SEMINAR UPDATE:

Last May 31, 2009 our Assistant Director and the Head of Administration and Operations, Atty. Hazel Riguera conducted the Care giver’s seminar at the SWU Main building AVR. You may want to check out our blog entry entitled “CARE GIVER SEMINAR” for more details.

NOTES UPDATE:

Commercial law jurisprudence notes by Atty. Erickson Balmes have also been distributed. If you have not received your copy please get it from Arvin.

Atty. Samson Troy Layese lectured on Transportation laws for the whole day last Saturday, June 6, 2009. We apologize for the delay in the distribution of his Lecture notes hopefully we can distribute it next week via email or print out.

MOCK BAR AND COACHING ASSINGNMENT UPDATES:

On Sunday we had our 3rd mock bar on Commercial Law. More than half of the reviewees took the mock bar exams. The booklets has already been sorted and distributed to the coaches. It will take them a week to check the booklets so ALL COACHES WILL HAVE COACHING STARTING JUNE 20 EXCEPT IF OTHERWISE ANNOUNCED. We have emphasized this matter before and we will emphasize this again, please be religious in attending the lectures every weekend in order to be updated of coaching schedules. Jurists Bar Review - Cebu just conducted the Care Giver Seminar last May 31, 2009 by Assistant Director and the Head of Administration and Operations, Atty. Hazel Riguera. The seminar was an exciting and interactive one. This will be our second to the last week of our series of lectures in Commercial law. This weekend Prof. Zarah Villanueva-Castro will be discussing Corporation law which is one of the major subjects in Commercial laws.

On Saturday, May 30,, 2009 our Assistant Director and the Head of Administration and Operations, Atty. Hazel Riguera will be visiting us and doing some administrative checking. She will also be doing a different kind of “coaching.” She will spend some time with reviewees who have personal problems. If you wish to talk to Atty. Riguera please inform our review assistant Mr. Alvin Pariola.

On Sunday, May 31, 2009 we will be having our “Care Giver’s seminars” from 9 a.m to 12 p.m. The seminar will be conducted by Atty. Hazel Riguera.If you want to know what the Care Giver’s seminar really is all about check out our Frequently Asked Questions on the care giver’s seminar.

Majority of our coaches are still checking the papers, so it is still unsure if there will be coaching sessions this weekend. Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the Jurists Bar Review Center Care Giver seminar

1.) What is the Care giver’s seminar? – It is a seminar to orient the loved ones of our reviewees as to what the hardship each bar examinees has to go through to prepare for the bar exams.

2.) What is the purpose of the Care giver’s seminar? - The purpose of the seminar is so that each of the loved one of our reviewees might be able to understand the hardships that each bar candidate has to go through and because they are made to understand of such, hopefully they will be more understanding and will lend their full support to our bar candidates.

3.) Who conducts the Care Giver seminar, and how long is the seminar? – The seminar is usually conducted by our Assistant Director and the Head of Administration and Operations, Atty. Hazel Riguera. The seminar runs for about 3 hours.

4.) Who should I send to the care giver’s seminar? – You can send anybody for as long as you feel that such person needs to understand the hardships that you have to go through as a bar candidate. You can send your parents, wife, friend even your girl friend or your boyfriend.

5.) Why was the Care Giver seminar conceptualized – We at Jurists Bar Review Center believe that passing the bar takes more than studying. Reviewees also need the full moral, financial and spiritual support of their loved ones. In order to get their full support they must first be made to understand what each bar candidate is going through. In a sense the care giver seminar is an appeal in behalf of you, our bar candidates to your loved ones to give their full support to you.

6.) Do I have to send somebody to the caregiver seminar, what if I don’t need anybody to understand what I am going through or my loved one is already a lawyer and he or she understands what I am going through already? – We encourage our reviewees to really send someone who feel that they need to be explained to on what you are going through. If you really don’t need anybody to go through the Care Giver seminar than we cannot do anything about it since it is your decision. If your loved one is already a lawyer then definitely they understand what you are going through and there seems to be no need for them to attend the care giver seminar. However if you want them to attend, you could still let them attend so that we can personally meet them and that they will be able to see the difference of reviewing at Jurists Bar Review Center ;

7.) Do you tell my loved ones that I have not been attending lectures and mock bar exams or about my performance at Jurists ? – Definitely not. Your private file regarding your performance at Jurists Bar review Center is for your own consumption and for our reference only. The Care Giver’s seminar is not a like your high school days “parent-teacher” conference wherein you are made “accountable” for your performance.

8.) What if my problem with my loved one is very deep does Jurists Bar Review Center offer to step in and help me in my problem? – Yes. Jurists Bar Review Center cares for each of its reviewee. If you feel that you need any of us to talk to one on one with your loved ones about some specific issues, we will be more than glad to be able to help.

9.) How do you inform my loved ones about the Care Giver seminar? – We send out mails two weeks before the seminar date. We also make follow up through telephone calls a week before the seminar date and send a text message 3 days before the seminar date. You could also help by reminding your loved ones about it.

10.) Does the Care Giver seminar really work? – Yes it definitely does! Jurists have been conducting this seminar for the past 5 years. We have heard feedbacks from some bar candidates that after their loved ones has attended the care giver seminar, they felt that they were more understood and were given more support be it moral, financial or spiritual by their loved ones.

It is the tradition of Jurists Bar Review Center that bar passers will give a testimonial every review opening to encourage the next batch of reviewees. Unfortunately, this year’s bar exam results was delayed and released during the holy week so most of those who passed were already out of town that was why we didn’t get to have testimonials from bar passers during the opening.

The first season 1 bar passer that we will be featuring is Atty. Anthony “Sonny” Santos O. Cortes. Atty. Cortes graduaded with a degree in Computer Engineering from the University of San Carlos, Talamban Cebu. He obtained his law degree from the Southwestern University School of law. He is married to Maricel Cortes and is father to 5 boys. He worked for 10 years as Regional Administrator for Central and Eastern Visayas regions for the Philam Group of companies.

Here is our short interview with Atty. Anthony Cortes:

Jurists: In general how did Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu help you in your review?

Atty. Cortes: JBRC has generally made me more confident in taking the bar exams.

Jurists: How did the three paragraph method taught by Jurists help you answer the questions in the bar exams?

Atty. Cortes: The 3-paragraph method is a very effective tool of formulating answers quick but logical.

Jurists: Did coaching and mock bar exams help you a lot? In what way did it help you pass the bar?

Atty. Cortes: Yes, it did! The coaching really made a huge difference. I suggest, everyone should complete all coaching sessions.

Jurists: What was your most memorable experience in Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu ?

Atty. Cortes: Memorable experience ? Hmmm… Don’t have any ! Been married for 15 years, I’ve had a lot of that experience … heheheheh ! I mean its meeting new friends and reviewers that made my Jurists experience unforgettable.

Atty. Cortes: For retakers, like me: "DONT QUIT!" For 1st timers: "BE PREPARED"

COACHING ASSIGNMENTS FOR REMEDIAL LAW MOCK BAR

The bar review assistant, Mr. Alvin Pariola, will just inform you as to what time is your coaching session. Coaching sessions are conducted only on Saturdays and Sundays while the lectures are going on except for those Juristas assigned to Chief Prosecutor Petralba. She will conduct her coaching sessions during weekdays. All Juristas under her will be inform through text as to their schedule. For more questions on coaching please see our COACHING FAQ. (Frequently Asked Questions) Please take note as to who your coach is for the remedial mock bar exam. Since it will take the coaches about 2 weeks toi check your booklets, it is presumed that coaching will commence on May 30, 2009 unless otherwise indicated. Take note Atty. Lutian will coach earlier as this is the only time he has as he is already based in Singapore. Those under Atty. Lutian will have their coaching session on May 23, 2009 at 1:30 p.m.

Juristas,

We had an interesting week last week. The last leg of our remedial law lectures by definitely one of the best lecturers in Remedial law, Dean Tranquil Salvador was moved to Thursday and Friday due to a situation that Dean Salvador has to take care in Manila on Saturday.

Last Saturday we had our first coaching sessions. About 80 % of those who took the Civil law mock bar has already been coached. Our Reviewee Relations Officer, Ma. Salud Barillo has come up with a great post documenting (Complete with pictures) the first mock bar and coaching session for season 2. You might want to check out the post in our blog entitled "The first mock bar and coaching in 2009 "

A lot interesting activities will be happening this week. First up is our second mock bar that will be the remedial law mock bar this Saturday. We hope that we nobody will be absent for the second mock bar. Please do not be afraid to take the mock bar. The mock bar is the only avenue wherein we can evaluate if you are prepared to take the bar through the coaching sessions. This is not a graded exam and you have no need to fear. For more information about the mock bar you might want to check out our blog for the frequently asked questions on mock bar exams and the frequently asked questions on coaching .

Secondly, those under Prof. Riguera for the Civil law mock bar coaching will have their coaching session this coming Saturday, May 16, 2009.

Thirdly, after the remedial law mock bar discussion, we will begin lectures in commercial law to be kicked off by a discussion in Intellectual Property by Prof. Celso Cruz. On Sunday, Prof. Manuel Riguera will engaged in an interesting discussion on Securities and banking and finance laws.

A lot of you has requested the power point lectures of Chief Prosecutor Petralba on Remedial law jurisprudence. We have previously sent the notes of Prof. Riguera on Remedial law jurisprudence and updates. Just recently we have sent out an email attaching the power point presentation of Chief Prosecutor Petralba.

Our Assistant Director and the Head of Administration and Operations, Atty. Hazel Riguera has scheduled the "Care givers" seminar on May 31, 2009. This coming Saturday and Sunday, we will be passing around a sheet of paper wherein you will fill up details as to who you wish to send to the care giver seminar including their address and contact numbers. We will be sending out invitations as soon as we get details of this. We hope you will cooperate with us regarding this matter.

THE FIRST MOCK BAR & COACHING in 2009

Last April 25, 2009 at 1:00 pm, Jurists Cebu held its first mock bar exam on Civil Law. Inspite of the black out, the 2009 reviewees in Jurists Cebu have endured their exams successfully. Congratulations Juristas! Here are the photographs taken during their exams.

There are two concerns that we wish to inform you about for this week.

Changes in Lecture schedule for May 8 to 10 2009

Dean Tranquil Salvador just called us up and announced a new schedule for this coming weekend. Please disregard the schedule posted and announced last lecture week and take note of this new schedule. Please inform others about this new schedule.

We understand that most of you do not want to be disturbed for coaching during the Remedial law lectures. Since there is no lecture on Saturday we have decided to devote it to Coaching. Sunday will also be devoted to coaching depending on availability of the coach. For Sunday coaching, you have to pre-arrange this with your coach on Saturday.

Coaching will be conducted on a first came first serve basis. All of the coaches already gave confirmation that they will be there on Saturday to do coaching (With the exception of Prof. Riguera who will start Coaching for the Civil law mock bar exam on May 16, 2009)

So here is the updated schedule:

Hello Juristas ! This coming May 2, 2009 will be the start of our first coaching sessions for the Civil mock bar exams. Some coaches would like to begin coaching right away. Others have scheduled their coaching session three weeks from now so please take note of the schedules. Coaches who have not indicated as to when their coaching schedule will commence is presumed to begin coaching by May 2, 2009.

The bar review assistant, Mr. Alvin Pariola, will just inform you as to what time is your coaching session. Coaching sessions are conducted only on Saturdays and Sundays while the lectures are going on. For more questions on coaching please see our COACHING FAQ. Now that the first mock bar exams is over, it’s now time for your first coaching session. I’m sure you all have questions with regards to the coaching process so here are some answers to Frequently asked questions (FAQ) about coaching.

1.) When does the coaching session start and when is it conducted? – Coaches usually take about a week or two before all bar exam booklets assigned to them have been completely checked. Most coaches start coaching the week after the mock bar exams. Coaching sessions are conducted while the bar review lectures are going on. The review center assistant will call your attention and inform you that your coach would like to meet you. Just excuse yourself from the lecture.

2.) What is the purpose and objective of coaching – Just like your sports coach who will guide you in your attempt to master your craft, Jurists Bar Review Center Coaches, guide you and makes sure you are prepared to take the bar exams. Although much of coaching is focused on how you answered the mock bar exams, coaches also make an effort to give you guidance on your review. Your bar exam coaches are your mentors and your friends. Do your best to learn from them.

3.) Is it really a one-on-one session? How long does it session take? – Yes. It is a one on one session. Each session spans from 15 minutes to an hour depending on the individual needs of each reviewee.

4.) Can I get to choose my coach? – No. At Jurists we have a coach rotation policy. The purpose of this is that there may some things that need improvement in your part that one coach cannot see, but may be seen by others. Currently Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu has 5 coaches. (A 6^th coach still has to be confirmed) Since there 6 mock bars, it is possible that you will be coached by one of the coaches twice.

5.) How is the individual reviewee’s progress monitored considering the coach rotation policy? – Each individual reviewee has a file that contains your data, attendance, your previous mock bar exam evaluation sheets and other important details. Before your coach will have a session with you, he or she will review your file and take into consideration your existing file so that your progress will be monitored. During the last leg of the mock bar exams, a summary of your evaluation sheet, pointing out your individual strength and weakness will be attached to your file and will be presented to you.

6.) Will my coach tell me if I am prepared to take the bar or not? – It depends on the coach. No coach would want to discourage a bar exam candidate so, as much possible they would choose their words carefully which would sometime obscure the direct message as to whether a bar exam candidate is prepared to take the bar or not. However most coach will gladly tell you if you ask their honest opinion about it, so the best way to know is to ask.

7.) Can I have my coaching session in some other day other than the weekends? – As a general rule it should be conducted during the weekend sessions while the lectures are going on. However it will depend upon your coach if they would be willing to meet you on another day.

8.) If mock bar exams are not graded how does my coach “score” my mock bar exams? – Your mock bar exam notebooks are evaluated on three Major criteria these are Form, Substance and Time-management. Each of these major criteria are divided into sub-criteria wherein you are graded on the basis of whether or not you have achieved an excellent, very satisfactory, satisfactory or that you need more room for improvement for a certain sub criteria. You will be provided with an evaluation sheet on how you performed in each mock bar exam. Your coach will also write down some comments in the evaluation sheet aside from writing comments on your mock bar exam notebook.

9.) What if I am absent during the time I was scheduled to be coached? Can I still attend my coaching session – This is the reason why we emphasize that it is very important that you attend all Jurists lectures since it is during these times that the coaching is conducted. If you are absent during the time that you are supposed to be coached, make sure you are present the next lecture day so that your coach can have a coaching session with you. However if you are absent for several lecture weekends, than your scheduled coach might not be able to hold a coaching session with you anymore and you will have to wait for another mock bar exam. This time another coach will try to have a coaching session with you for that particular mock bar and the previous mock bar wherein you were not coached. We do our best to ensure that you will be coached for each mock bar. However in order that this be achieved, we reiterate that you should not be absent in any of the lecture sessions.

10.) Does coaching really help? Does it guarantee my passing the bar? With regards to the first question, yes it does. Coaching helps the reviewee connect with somebody that has been through the same experience. Ask any Jurists Bar review alumni who has been faithful in taking the mock bar exams and has gone through all coaching sessions and you will know how coaching has helped them a lot when they were preparing for the bar exams. With regards to the second question, coaching does not guarantee that you can pass the bar. Even if you did all you can to study your books, follow Jurists protocols and even if you were present in all lectures, took all mock bar exams and availed of all coaching sessions, it still does not guarantee your passing the bar. There are too many factors involved that has to be taken into consideration. However having a coach does make your journey to hurdle the bar much more easier and it will do a lot to help you pass the bar or even top it.

We just had our first mock bar here at Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu last Saturday. The Civil law mock bar exam was conducted in the afternoon of April 25, 2009. Quite a good number took the exams, a total of 68 all in all. Sadly, 21 reviewees did not take the exam for several reasons, the majority of the reason being that they are not prepared to take the mock bar exams.

We would like to emphasize that you do not need to be afraid of taking the mock bar exams. To make the most out of what you paid for you should take each and every mock bar exams. I will emphasize on this later on when I release the post entitled “Ten reasons why you should take each and every mock bar exams.”

People always fear the unknown. This could also be one of the reasons probably why some reviewees do not want to take the exam. So in order to somehow make you more comfortable with the mock bar exams let me answer some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the Jurists Mock Bar exams.

1.) How many mock bar exams will be given? – All in all there are six mock bar exams. For this year the subjects that will be covered by the Mock bar exams will be Civil law, Remedial law, Commercial law, Criminal law, Legal Ethics and Taxation. The subjects covered are not the same for each year. It will depend on the discretion of the Review director.

2.) Why only 6 subjects, are there not 8 bar subjects ? – Because of the lack of time, only 6 mock bar exams are given, also we do not want to give a mock bar exam especially during the months of July and August since the bar exams is fast approaching during that time and we do not want to add to the nervousness and stress that each reviewee is experiencing.

3.) Are these full mock bar exams? – Yes. When you take the exams, it is as if you are taking the actual bar exams. Some mock bar exams are even long and have more than 30 questions including sub-questions. We also try to simulate the actual bar exam experience and the amount of time given is the same as that of the actual bar exams. However there are some rules that differ from the actual bar exams so make sure you read the rules of the actual bar exams and do not rely on the rules, guidelines and norms of the mock bar exams.

4.) What type of questions are asked in the mock bar exams? - We try to include all types of questions these includes, definitions, enumerations. Most questions are however problem type questions just like in the actual bar exams

5.) Why are we made to pay for the mock bar exam booklets are they not included in the tuition fee ? – The mock bar exams booklets are not included in the tuition fee. The reason for such is that we do not know how many booklet a reviewee needs when he or she takes the mock bar exams. Others also want to buy extra booklets so they can practice at home.

6.) Are the mock bar booklets the same as that of the actual bar exam booklets ? The pages of the mock bar exam booklets are more or less a replica of the actual bar exam booklet. However the actual bar exam booklets has a different front page. The front page of the actual bar exam booklet has also a different color for each bar subject.

7.) If I come in late or I am absent can I still take the mock bar exams? – The general rule is that we do not allow those who are late or absent to take the mock bar exams. We want you to be disciplined. In the actual bar exams, you cannot take the exams if you are late. However some circumstances require special consideration, so we bend the rules from time to time depending on the circumstances.

8.) Are these the same exams every offered in Jurists every year ? – No. The review director makes sure that we have a fresh new exam every year. The questions every year are new, although there may be some old ones thrown in.

9.) Can we take home the exam questionnaire? – Yes. In the actual bar exams, you cannot do this. In the Jurists mock bar exams, you can bring home the exam questionnaire for your reference.

10.) Do you provide a copy of the mock bar exam answers? – Yes. Copies of the mock bar exam answers may be given via electronic mail or through printed form. Also, there is a mock bar exam discussion that will reveal the correct. Some reviewees do not attend the mock bar exam discussion as they are already stressed out after the mock bar exams. We understand this but You should not miss the mock bar exam discussion as lectures on how to answer each question the Jurists way is discussed.

11.) Will my mock bar exams booklet be returned to me – Yes. The mock bar booklets first be checked by the coaches. The coaches will then schedule a session with you after which you will get your mock bar booklet.

12.) Is the mock bar exams a graded exam? - No. You do not have to worry about getting a failing grade here. Unlike the actual bar exams, we give more weight on how you answer the questions rather than if your answers are correct or not. However the correctness of your answers will be considered in the evaluation.

The spirit of the famous 3 paragraph rule

I heard questions from some of the bar examinees asking another examinee in the previous bar examinations if they used the three (3) paragraph rule taught in Jurists. Some even texted me that some of the examinees blamed Jurists. As we went out of the bar examination site in La Salle, Taft, some say, "hey the examination was too long, I did not use the 3 paragraph rule...tsk,tsk,tsk. Hearing the comment, flow of questions entered my mind. Like how do we really apply the 3 paragraph rule during the actual examinations?

From what I encountered, I think there has been a misconception in the application of the 3 paragraph rule taught in Jurists. Actually, the application of the 3 paragraph rule can always be applied whether the examination is too long. I asked, Atty. Zigfred Diaz about this, he said that the spirit of the 3 paragraph rule is that your answer must contain the premise of your answer to the question, next is the law supporting the answer and lastly, the application of the said law to the problem given. In presenting it, it can either be in 3 paragaraph or in 3 to 5 sentences depending on the length of the examination. He further said that even if you read some of the Q and A of the previous examinatios like the answer of Atty. Abuel a topnotcher of the 1998 Bar Examination or Prof. Domondon, we can see the pattern of the 3 paragraph rule.

What caused me to write this blog, is that I just want to clear out the misconception because I also have the same misconception before =). Dear reviewees, bear in mind and understand the 3 paragraph, not by it's literal meaning but by the logic and spirit behind it. What to do if you have not received your "e-handout"

Hi Juristas, We have recieved a text message from some of you that you have not recieved your e-handouts via email. The following are the possible reasons and the suggested solutions:

1.) You did not provide an email address - When you enrolled, there is an "email" blank that you are suppose to fill up which you possibly failed to fill up.

SOLUTION: Send an email to juristsbarcebuNOSPAM@gmail.com (Please remove NOSPAM to reveal our true email address) and give us your email address. Please do not forget to propery identify yourself when communicating with us. You could also give your email to Mr. Alvin Pariola. If you do not have an email address, sign up for one (It's free anyway) and send it to the above mentioned email.

2.) The email address you provided was wrong - There could be a mispelling in the email address you provided. Another possibility is that we could not understand your handwriting that is why we had a difficult time figuring out the email address that you provided.

SOLUTION: Same as number 1.

3.) The email sent to you could be in your SPAM or JUNK folder - All email providers have SPAM or JUNK filters, our email could have mistakenly ended up there.

SOLUTION: Check your SPAM or JUNK folder and transfer the email we sent to your inbox.

We hope the solutions provided will solve the problem. Today we resent the e-handouts to 5 email addresses. We took the time to review and match the computer encoded file with your original application to make sure that we got the right email address. Unfortunately there are three email addresses that we cannot figure out. Just follow the solution suggested in number 1 and we will soon send you the e-handouts.

Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu distrubes "e-handouts"

Hi Juristas, this is to inform you that we have sent our first batch of "e-handouts" (Short for electronic handouts). Take note that we will not be giving out a "hard copy" or printed copy of these e-handouts as these are considered as supplements to the regular printed handouts.

The first batch of e-handouts are all of the lectures of Atty. Elmer Rabuya on Civil law, plus other suplements. We hope this can help you as you prepare for the bar exams.

For those who do not have email addresses, please inform our help desk or Mr. Alvin Pariola of your email address. To recieve a "e-handout" you need to have an email address.

If you already provided your email address but you haven't recieved your e-handout then something must be wrong with the email you provided. Please check your review enrollment application form so that this error will be corrected.

Before anything else, we would like to introduce to you the key personnel that drive Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu. Aside from our Manila counterparts, Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu is manned by the following personnel.

Atty. Pepita Jane Petralba is one of the main coordinators and coach for Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu. She is currently Cebu province chief prosecutor. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in laws from a European university and is currently teaching law subjects. She recently authored the book “An Introduction to Human Rights Law for Philippine Students.”

Atty. Zigfred Diaz is a proud product of the Jurists Bar Review Center. He serves as one of the coordinators and coaches for Jurists Bar Center Cebu. He is currently teaching law subjects at the Southwestern School of law and the Cebu Institute of Technology. He co-authored the widely popular 4 volume, statistical based-codal based-bar problem based Lex Pareto Notes. Atty. Alrey Ouano graduated from the Jurists Bar Review center as well. Together with Atty. Diaz, he is one of the co-authors of the Lex Pareto Notes. He serves as one of the coaches and coordinators of Jurists Bar Review center Cebu.

Atty. Anabel Pulvera is a managing partner of Riveral Pulvera & Associates. She is currently pursuing her master's of law degree with the San Beda College of Law. She has been a long time law professor teaching review subjects such as Political law, Remedial law and Public International law. Currently she is the Integrated Bar of the Philippines Cebu chapter's Press relations officer.

Dean Godwin Denzel Manginsay is the Dean of the Southwestern University School of law. He has given his full support to Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu by letting us use most of the law school’s facility.

Ma. Salud Barillo serves as reviewee relations in charge for Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu. As a former reviewee herself, she understands how the Jurists system operates and will be seeking to strengthen the bond of relationship between the review center, and the reviewees. Alvin Pariola is the review center assistant. His main job is take care of reviewee needs. He takes care of all the other details that is needed to run the review center such as, hand outs, attendance sheet, i.ds, organizing the mock bar among other things.

Nolito Dayanan formerly served as Jurists Bar Review Center assistant in Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu season 1. Now, a reviewee himself in Jurists Bar Review Center Season 2, Although we do not want to disturb Noli anymore as he has to prepare for the bar, because of his love for the review center, he has still volunteered to lend a helping hand from time to time in Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu season 2. Professor Manuel R. Riguera is the Bar Review Director of Jurists. Jurists Bar Cebu offers "remote enrollment"

I have recieved several inquiries that some reviewees would like to enroll now to ensure that they will have a slot at Jurists Bar Review Center Cebu. They want to enroll as early as now because they want to beat the April 3, 2009 deadline. Since they are still in the provinces they are asking if there if "online" enrolment is possible.

Well, "online enrolment" is not yet possible but it is possible to do what I call "remote" enrolment.

"Remote" enrollment is simply achieved by the following:

1.) Email us that you wish to avail of remote enrollment at juristsbarcebuNOSPAM@gmail.com (Remove NOSPAM to reveal our true email address)

2.) We will email you a copy of the enrollment form.

3.) Print it fill out the blanks and sign the form.

4.) Have it scanned and email it back to us.

5.) Afterwards you will be advised to deposit your money to a Jurists Bar Review Center bank account.

6.) Scan the deposit slip and email it back to us.

7.) You will be given an email confirmation that we have received your payment and that you are officially enrolled.

Please be advised that you will only be considered officially enrolled once all the seven steps are followed. You will be issued an official reciept in Cebu.

Vitamins to take in preparation for the bar exams

I recieved a text message from a law student asking me what are the vitamins that he should take in preparation for the bar exams.

Well, I am no doctor and I believe the best advice would be to go to your doctor and ask because you might be allergic to certain herbal supplements out in the market.

Anyway what I can recommend is only based on my experience. When I took the bar, I maintained a food supplement called "Circulan 4 in 1." I think a bought more than 7 cartoons in advance and brough it to Manila. I bought it cheap because I bought in bulk from a friend who used to own a pharmacy.

Some people think Circulan is only for good blood circulation, however take note that it contains Gingko for the arteries which is also good for the memory. It also contains Hawthorn Berry [for a healthy heart], Garlic Oil [for blood] and Lemon Balm. [for the nerves]

I used to take two in the morning, two at lunch and two in the evening, but because it keeps me very much wide alert and I was flowing with so much energy that I had a hard time getting a good night's rest. So I took only the morning and lunch dosage. I still had a hard time sleeping, so I took 2 in the morning and 1 during lunchtime. This time, I think I hit the right dosage. I had just enough to keep me wide awake and alert at the same time I got my good night's sleep.

Jurists bar review center is one of the most innovative review bar review centers, if not the most innovative. Our pioneering and break through system of one on one coaching style and mock bar exams has tried to be duplicated by others, but never equalled and not with the same success as we had.

Now, another innovation we have is the utilization of Web 2.0 technologies to market and get in touch with our reviewees. As of now to my knowledge we are the only Bar review center sucessfully harnesing web 2.0 technologies to our advantage. Web 2.0 technology refers to the "new internet" technologies like blogging, social networking and microblogging. We are proud of this achievment.
